How to Take Advantage of BC Hydro’s Multifamily EV Charger Rebates

BC Hydro Rebates Make EV Charger Installation Even More Cost-Efficient

Here in Canada, British Columbia is one of the top provinces to own an electric vehicle thanks to our relatively developed EV infrastructure. This includes nearly 500 public charging stations in Vancouver alone that EV drivers can take advantage of. Residents of apartment complexes and other strata housing have historically had more of a challenge charging at home, but BC Hydro continues to offer excellent multifamily EV charger rebate options to help combat this obstacle to EV adoption.

As Vancouver’s leading EV charging experts, TCA Electric aims to help all EV drivers get the most from their driving experience. We’ve already worked with owners of multifamily residential buildings to take advantage of the excellent EV charger rebate options in BC. If you’re looking to add EV chargers to your multifamily building, here’s what you should know about available rebates!

NRCan funding has ended—but rebates are still substantial!

As part of an increased push for EV infrastructure at multifamily complexes, Natural Resource Canada’s (NRCan) Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure funding had been focused on multifamily charging systems in spring of 2022. Unfortunately, the increased rebates from this program have ended, as the additional funding has been used up.

The good news is that the remaining BC Hydro EV charging rebate options are still excellent, but it’s important to act quickly to ensure you receive funding for your EV project!

BC Hydro’s EV Charger Rebate Program

BC Hydro has offered substantial rebates for EV chargers for several years now, helping push Vancouver and all of British Columbia forward when it comes to electric vehicle adoption. The rebates for multifamily charging systems are both significant and well thought out, with options serving both newer and more outdated strata housing complexes.

EV Ready rebates

For buildings where electrical systems may be outdated or otherwise not equipped to support additional demands from EV charging, BC Hydro continues to offer rebates for the entire process of getting these buildings “EV Ready.”

This includes $3,000 of funding to create an EV Ready plan—a carefully thought out framework for how to equip a given building to support electric vehicle charging infrastructure. This plan must be drawn up by a professional EV charging electrician, and the rebate covers the cost of hiring a contractor.

Funding also covers execution of the EV Ready plan, with a substantial rebate available to support the cost of infrastructure needed for making a building EV Ready. The EV Ready infrastructure rebate covers up to 50% of the cost to install needed electrical systems and infrastructure indicated within the EV Ready plan, up to a maximum of $600 per parking space and $120,000 for the entire project.

Finally, BC Hydro also includes an EV charger rebate for this path, covering up to $1,400 to purchase and install Level 2 EV chargers, up to a maximum of $14,000.

EV charger only rebate

Those with strata housing complexes already equipped to handle EV charging infrastructure still receive significant incentives to add EV chargers. BC Hydro’s standalone EV charger rebate covers an even greater amount of the cost to install Level 2 chargers, providing up to $2,000 per charger, though still to a maximum of $14,000.

Apply today with your electrician!

To begin the application process for either the EV Ready infrastructure rebate or the standalone EV charger rebates, pre-approval is needed. This pre-approval requires details about your building and the electrical work to be completed, and following pre-approval the final application can be completed.

Because the application process is multifaceted, it’s a good idea to work directly with a trusted EV charging electrician from the very start of the process! Our licensed and qualified electricians here at TCA Electric know how to fulfill all the requirements of the application process, and we’ll work with you every step of the way. Working with a knowledgeable electrician will help speed up the process of applying for a rebate and help secure funding for your project.
