British Columbia has robust rebate offerings that help to reduce the upfront cost of installing an EV charger, whether you’re the owner of a single-family home, a multifamily building, or a business or storefront.
Requirements for EV charger rebates in BC change often, so the time has come to update our readers again on the best offerings out there when it comes to installing a charging station. Additional Funding for Single-Family EV Charger Rebates in BC
One of the biggest developments here in 2023 has been an increase in the amount of money available for single-family homeowners. Previously, owners of single-family homes (including townhouses and row homes) could receive a rebate for up to 50% of the cost to purchase and install a Level 2 EV charger, to a maximum of $350.
Now, in addition to that $350 rebate, an additional $250 rebate has been added for those who install an eligible smart charger. Typically, the smart charger we’ve seen used for this rebate has been the JuiceBox Level 2 home EV charger. With up to $600 in rebates now available, installing a home EV charger is more affordable than ever!
The Multi-family Rebate Program Continues to Offer Significant Funding
Perhaps the most underutilized of all BC EV charger rebates, the rebate program for multi-family properties continues to offer substantial funding not just for EV charging stations, but the upgrades necessary to support them as well.
We’ve covered this rebate program in the past, but here’s a refresher on what’s offered:
EV Ready Plan Rebate
Supporting a full EV charging system can be difficult in buildings with older electrical infrastructure. Recognizing this challenge, BC Hydro provides funding for the creation of an “EV Ready” plan—a plan created alongside a professional electrician for how to upgrade the building to support EV chargers. Up to $3,000 in rebates are available for this portion, and multifamily building owners are automatically eligible.
EV Ready Infrastructure
With the plan in place, the time then comes to execute on it. BC Hydro also provides funding for the necessary infrastructure upgrades needed to support an EV charging array. This portion of the multifamily rebate provides up to $120,000 to support EV Ready infrastructure upgrades. Finally, BC Hydro also provides incentives for the purchase and installation of charging stations themselves, with up to $14,000 in rebates available per apartment or condo complex. This includes a maximum of $1,400 per charger for those who participated in the EV Ready program, and up to $2,000 per charger for those whose buildings were already EV Ready.
Business Owners Eligible for EV Charger Rebates in BC
Lastly, if you’re looking to electrify your company fleet—or provide charging for your EV owning employees—workplace EV charging rebates are generous for BC business owners. Workplaces can receive up to $14,000 in total funding, to be put toward the cost of purchasing and installing eligible EV chargers. This funding includes up to $2,000 per charger, so multiple chargers must be installed to receive the full amount available.
